I thought I'd try a little something different for my Monday morning. I noticed that Empty Nest was participating in a fun thing called Monday Listicles which is hosted by Sasha from The Good Life. This weeks list had me reminisce about ten things I thought I would be when I grew up. Enjoy!
1. A Barbie designer: yes, I was going to design clothes and household items for Barbie.
2. A concert pianist: I was going play and compose beautiful music for the world. The only problem was that I didn't like to practice as I should and I really only loved to play theme music from my favorite movies.
3. A choir director: I admired my choir director so much and enjoyed singing in the choir. I definitely thought this was something I could do.
4. A nurse: I took the classes for my CNA, but never the test. I did work in nursing homes, but after I saw the first patient pass away I knew that I absolutely couldn't do it. I realized that nursing wasn't for me either. I had a little bit of a problem at this stage in my life with follow through.
5. A world traveler: growing up in a small town filled me with big dreams of getting the heck outta there. I wanted to run away to Europe and see what I could see.
6. A high school English teacher: Next to my music classes, Novels, Poetry and Prose was my all time favorite. I enjoyed my creative writing classes so much. Of all the things I wished I would have followed through on, this is the one.
7. A poet: I use to sneak away to the river and write and write and write. Now, I write snippets in my mind that I forget by the time dinner needs to be made.
8. An aid worker in another country or a missionary: I thought that maybe I could make a difference in this way.
9: A psychologist: People were always coming to me with their problems and I was a good listener. I thought I could get paid for listening. (I know now that there is more to the job than this.)
10. A certain someone's wife: no one famous, but he is infamous to those who know me.
Who knew that I would be designing Barbie clothes and cutting furniture out for my daughter, playing the piano for church or being applauded by chubby little fingers and asked to encore "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"? I didn't direct a choir, but I have directed my trio to swing sweet songs and taught them how to read a bit of music. I nurse my family back to health when they need it, use practical first aid and keep them healthy daily. I have traveled to Europe and I didn't get to just visit. I lived there for three years and got to explore far more than I would have if I was just passing through. Next year, I will being teaching high school English to my oldest son, and I do write little poems for my family and friends. I may not be a missionary in another country, but I am one right where I'm at. As far as becoming a psychologist, I'm not sorry that didn't come true. I do still listen and I enjoy encouraging others. I get to do that pretty daily! Finally,I thank God that He knew me better than I knew myself. Because I married the adventurous and sweet man that I did, I get to be all of these things and have been able to experience many of these adventures. He makes my dreams come true!

This was a great list. I must admit to fantasizing about being a concert pianist. That was really a fantasy since I can't play a note. But they looked so elegant.
ReplyDeleteThey really do! It's never too late to learn:)
DeleteAs much as I loved your list, I loved your closing paragraph even more! I believe your dreams did come true!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I do believe they came true, too:)
DeleteThank you for being my psycologist. (sp) I too enjoyed your last paragraph as well as the 10 items.
ReplyDeleteYou are a huge encouragement to me and a dear friend. I will always listen and pray:)
DeleteWhat a cute post and yes, your closing paragraph said it all, your dreams did come true. Blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much. I have been blessed and it was fun to be able to tie it all together. Sometimes it is so easy to think that we threw it all away, when really, God had an alternate plan which included making some of our dreams come true. It may not be how WE imagined it, but it is ever so much better!
DeleteI especially liked how you pulled everything together at the end. So many of the things on your list did happen, just not in the way you had expected.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting:) Yes!! Not how I expected at all, but praise God they did:)
DeleteWhat a great list! I love that you do some many things you wanted to do!
ReplyDeleteI think everyone who grew up in a small town can relate to #5. Great list.
ReplyDeleteI admired your/my choir director! He was my favorite teacher! I still send him a Christmas card every year!
